Dear Jess,

A year ago, while I was in my third trimester, I had an idea. A Halloween costume idea to be specific. My eldest was a dragon for his first Halloween and I knew I was most likely going to reuse it for the baby in my belly. We have a giant direwolf-sized husky for a furbaby. My brother-in-law has an all white husky too. Ding! Lightbulb goes off, and I knew I was going to be making a Jon Snow costume for my 3 year old.

I loved how it turned out and wanted to share my process with any other Game of Thrones fans out there.

The Materials

The main parts of the costume I knew I needed to create a believable mini Jon Snow was:

Black fur cloak

  • 1.5 yards of black felt – $4
  • 1/3 yard of black “grizzly” fuax fur – $5
  • Magnetic purse buckle – $7
  • Black thread and needle

Longclaw the sword

House Stark symbol

Black Fur Cloak

  1. Fold the black felt in half and draw a semi-circle with a 2-foot radius. Cut it out.
  2. Cut the neck hole using your child’s t-shirt as a guide (or your actual child– mine just happened to be at preschool).
  3. Use the same technique to make a 1-foot semi-circle with the faux fur.
  4. Sew the two pieces together along the top edge with black thread (see image below for the hem line).
  5. Measure a length of felt long enough to make the clasp.
  6. Sew the magnetic clasps to the cloak.

Longclaw the Sword

I lucked out and had this arctic fox Happy Meal toy already. I searched for “white wolf figurine” online and could only find tiny ones, too small for my dollar store sword. If you don’t already have one, here are a few options for making the decorative wolf ornament on top of the sword:

  • There may be more luck when searching for “arctic fox figurine”
  • There apparently is a whole Happy Meal toy reselling syndicate on eBay that you could explore
  • This Youtube video demonstrates how to build a wolf out of newspaper and paint.

1. Perform surgery on the plush by cutting it in half, amputating its front legs and sewing the holes shut.

2. Cut the top nob off of the sword so the plush could go over the sword top and hot glue them together.

3. Cut another strip of black felt, wrap it around the base of the stuffed fox and glue it down.

4. To make the holster, use this pattern and cut a belt out of black felt (I had a lot left over!)

House Stark Symbol

1. Cut the dragon off of the armor (thank God Jon Snow isn’t a Targaryen!)

2. Print this pattern

3. Trace the pattern onto black construction paper. Push down hard and go over the stencil several times so you make an indent on the construction paper underneath.

4. Use a silver marker to fill in the indented lines.

5. Roughly cut down close to the outline.

6. Use spray adhesive to adhere onto a small cardboard piece.

7. Cut closer to the Stark symbol outline.

8. Hot glue to the armor.

DONE! The hardest part of this project was getting the time to go to the fabric store and find affordable faux fur (thank you JoAnn Fabric coupons!)

If you try this costume for Halloween, let me know! I’d love to see your kiddos with this costume on!

Love,

Tracy
